Quick reference: FERS basic annuity
Educational formula only.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Basic formula | High-3 × years × 1% (or 1.1% if eligible) |
| Monthly | Annual ÷ 12 |
| Not modeled | Survivor elections, early reductions, supplement, Social Security |
For workplace deferral growth outside FERS, see the 403(b) calculator.
How the estimate is built
Annual annuity = high-3 × years of service × (multiplier ÷ 100). Monthly = annual ÷ 12.
Example scenario
High-3 $95,000, 25 years, 1% → $23,750/year (~$1,979/month). Switching to 1.1% (if eligible) raises the sketch to $26,125/year.
FAQ
What is high-3?
Your average of the highest three consecutive years of basic pay used in the FERS annuity formula. Exact definitions follow OPM rules.
1.0% vs 1.1% multiplier?
Most FERS retirees use 1% × high-3 × years. A 1.1% multiplier can apply when retiring at or after MRA with 30+ years (simplified here — verify eligibility).
Is Social Security included?
No. This page estimates the basic FERS annuity only, not Social Security or the FERS Special Retirement Supplement.
Survivor benefits / reductions?
Court orders, survivor elections, and early-retirement reductions are not modeled — use OPM estimates for official figures.
