Laminate Floor Cost Calculator
Estimate laminate flooring cost from square footage and grade — including waste, underlayment, old-floor removal, and whether you install it yourself. Click any i for detail.

Use finished floor area (length × width of each room, then sum). Closets count; stairs usually need a separate estimate. |

Material grade
Budget covers thinner big-box planks. Mid-grade is the usual household pick. Premium / waterproof costs more up front and often installs a bit slower. |

Scales materials and labor midpoints for typical state-level costs versus the U.S. average. Not a store SKU or installer quote. |
Options
How to use this calculator
- Enter the square footage you want to cover.
- Choose material grade and your state (or U.S. average).
- Toggle underlayment, old-floor removal, or DIY install.
- Review the breakdown — materials already include a 10% waste factor.
Results explained
The headline is your project midpoint after state scaling. Materials are calculated on area × 1.10 so cut waste and odd angles are not forgotten.
- Materials — planks at the grade you selected.
- Installation — omitted when DIY is checked.
- Underlayment / removal — optional lines when toggled on.
Quick reference: laminate cost per sq ft
U.S.-average midpoints before state scaling. Materials in the calculator also add 10% waste.
| Grade | Materials | Pro install | Combined* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | $1.75 | $2.50 | $4.25 |
| Mid-grade | $2.75 | $3.10 | $5.85 |
| Premium / waterproof | $4.25 | $3.60 | $7.85 |
*Before waste, underlayment (~$0.55/sq ft), or removal (~$1.75/sq ft). Combined is materials + install only.
How the estimate is built
Material midpoints are about $1.75 / $2.75 / $4.25 per sq ft for budget, mid-grade, and premium. Pro install adds about $2.50 / $3.10 / $3.60 per sq ft. Underlayment is about $0.55/sq ft; old flooring removal about $1.75/sq ft.
Material and underlayment quantities use a 10% waste factor. Your state scales the U.S.-average midpoints. The band is about 82%–122% of the midpoint.
Example scenario
A 400 sq ft mid-grade job with underlayment and pro install at U.S. average pricing is roughly $1,210 materials (with waste) + $1,240 labor + $242 underlayment ≈ $2,690.
FAQ
Is waterproof laminate the same as vinyl plank (LVP)?
Not exactly. Many “waterproof laminate” lines still differ from rigid LVP. If you are shopping LVP only, treat the premium tier as a rough cousin — get SKU-specific quotes.
Why add 10% waste?
Cuts, pattern matching, and damaged planks eat inventory. Ordering exact square footage usually leaves you short.
What about baseboards and transitions?
Not modeled here. Trim and reducers are often a few hundred dollars more on a whole-home job — ask your installer to line-item them.
