Cool-season fescue mixes dominate northern yards. Bermuda is common in warm sunny climates. Zoysia costs more and grows slower but can mean denser turf.

Options

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the square footage you plan to cover.
  2. Choose a sod type suited to your climate.
  3. Keep site prep on unless the ground is already finished grade.
  4. Check DIY if you will lay rolls yourself (delivery/install labor drops out).

Results explained

The large number is an installed midpoint (or materials-focused total if DIY is on). Prep and topsoil appear only when those options are checked.

Quick reference: sod cost per sq ft

U.S.-average midpoints before state scaling.

Sod type Sod only Delivery & install Installed total*
Bermuda $0.50 $0.80 $1.30
Tall fescue / cool-season $0.55 $0.85 $1.40
Zoysia $0.75 $0.95 $1.70

*Before site prep (~$0.40/sq ft) or topsoil (~$0.35/sq ft). One acre = 43,560 sq ft.

How the estimate is built

Sod material midpoints are about $0.50–$0.75/sq ft depending on type; pro delivery and install add about $0.80–$0.95/sq ft. Site prep is about $0.40/sq ft; topsoil amendment about $0.35/sq ft.

Your state scales the U.S.-average midpoints. The band is roughly 80%–128% of the midpoint because yard access and soil conditions vary widely.

Example scenario

A 2,000 sq ft fescue lawn with prep at U.S. average pricing: sod ~$1,100 + install ~$1,700 + prep ~$800 ≈ $3,600.

FAQ

Should I seed instead of sod?

Seeding is cheaper but slower and more weather-sensitive. This tool is for instant coverage with sod rolls or pallets — not seed-and-straw jobs.

Is watering included?

No. Budget time and water for daily watering in the first two weeks; that cost sits outside this estimate.

What about slopes or rocky soil?

Steep grades and rocky digs push prep well above the midpoint. Try a higher-cost state as a rough stress test, then get a site visit bid.
