Arizona maintenance inputs

Income figures are
i
Income basis

Keep both spouses on annual or both on monthly figures.

Payor income ($)
i
Payor income

Spouse more able to pay maintenance. Include steady compensation.

Recipient income ($)
i
Recipient income

Spouse who may receive maintenance — earning capacity matters as much as current pay.

Marriage length (years)
i
Marriage length

A central factor for both eligibility narrative and how long maintenance might last.

Share of income difference (%)
i
Difference share

Planning percent applied to the income gap. Arizona does not mandate this dial.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter payor and recipient income on one shared basis.
  2. Enter years married.
  3. Adjust the difference-share percent to match the range you're negotiating.
  4. Use the duration sketch as a conversation starter, not a prediction.

Results explained

Arizona courts first consider whether maintenance is appropriate, then weigh statutory factors for amount and term (financial resources, earning ability, marriage length, standard of living, age/health, and more). There is no fixed percentage formula. Our sketch uses a share of the income difference for dollars and marriage-length bands for a duration outline.

Amount model% of income difference ÷ 12
Short marriage (<5 yrs)Often brief / transitional duration sketch
5–10 years~40% of marriage length (sketch)
10–20 / 20+ years~50% / ~65% of marriage length (sketch)

How the estimate is built

Annual sketch = diff% × max(0, payor − recipient). Duration sketch uses marriage-length bands (short / mid / long) described in the reference table.

Example scenario

Payor $125,000, recipient $40,000, 30% of difference → $25,500/year (~$2,125/month). A 12-year marriage lands in the longer mid band → duration sketch around 6 years.

FAQ

Is maintenance automatic in Arizona?

No. The court must find a basis for maintenance under the statute before setting amount and duration.

Does self-support ability end maintenance?

Earning capacity and time to become self-sufficient are major factors. Vocational evidence often matters.

Property division vs maintenance?

A larger property award can reduce maintenance need. Model both sides of the settlement together.

Modifiable later?

Many awards can be modified on a substantial and continuing change in circumstances — check your decree language.
