Sum room lengths × widths. Installers also buy by the roll width, so waste of 5–15% is common—this midpoint is finish-area based.

Carpet grade

Carpet grade

Builder grade is thin multi-family stock. Mid is typical residential. Premium is denser fiber with better warranties.

Your state

Scales U.S.-average labor and material midpoints for typical state-level pricing. It is not an on-site bid.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the floor area to be carpeted.
  2. Select builder, mid, or premium installed grade.
  3. Toggle pad upgrade, furniture move, and old carpet removal.
  4. Choose your state and check the range band.

Results explained

Installed carpet grade × area is the base. Pad and removal scale with square footage; furniture move is a flat line.

Quick reference: carpet install midpoints

Installed U.S.-average midpoints before the selected state adjustment.

ScopeMidpoint
Builder-grade installed$3.50/sq ft
Mid-grade installed (default)$5.50/sq ft
Premium installed$8.50/sq ft
Pad upgrade+$0.90/sq ft
Furniture move$250 flat
Old carpet removal+$0.75/sq ft

Rates are planning midpoints; difficult access, repairs, and minimum job charges can shift quotes.

How the estimate is built

Total ≈ (sq ft × grade $/sq ft) + Σ(per-sq-ft options × sq ft) + furniture flat, then × state multiplier.

Example scenario

A 1,000 sq ft mid-grade install with pad upgrade is about $6,400 at U.S. average ($5.50 × 1,000 + $0.90 × 1,000).

FAQ

Should I enter square yards?

No—use square feet here. Divide square yards by 9 if your quote is in yards.

Is padding included in the grade price?

A basic pad is often bundled; the pad upgrade line models a thicker comfort pad.

Do stairs cost more?

Usually yes. Stair work is labor-heavy and may need a separate line from your installer.
