Florida Alimony Calculator
Build a planning estimate for Florida alimony from both incomes and marriage length. Florida courts weigh statutory factors and alimony types (including durational limits) rather than one statewide dollar formula — this tool makes that explicit. Click any i for detail.
Florida planning inputs
Income figures are
i
Income basis
Use comparable figures for both spouses (both annual or both monthly). |
|
|---|---|
Payor income ($)
i
Payor income
Spouse with greater ability to pay. Net is preferable when available. |
|
Recipient income ($)
i
Recipient income
Spouse seeking support — include wages and steady other income. |
|
Marriage length (years)
i
Marriage length
Florida duration discussions often track short / moderate / long marriages. We sketch a duration ceiling from your years married. |
|
Share of income difference (%)
i
Difference share
Planning dial for amount. Florida does not mandate this percent — adjust to match settlement talks. |
How to use this calculator
- Enter both incomes on the same annual/monthly basis.
- Enter years married.
- Set the difference-share percent used for the amount sketch.
- Compare the monthly estimate with the modeled duration band for your marriage length.
Results explained
Florida alimony is factor- and type-driven (bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, durational, etc.), not a single percentage statute like Illinois maintenance. Recent reforms also tightened permanent-type awards. This calculator uses a transparent share of income difference for amount and marriage-length duration bands so you can stress-test settlement ranges — not predict a judge.

| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Amount model | % of (payor − recipient) income ÷ 12 |
| Short marriage (<10 yrs) | Duration sketch up to ~50% of years married |
| Moderate (10–20 yrs) | Up to ~60% of years married |
| Long (20+ yrs) | Up to ~75% of years married (still not “permanent” by default) |
For house equity in a divorce, see the divorce buyout calculator.
How the estimate is built
Annual sketch = diff% × max(0, payor − recipient). Monthly = annual ÷ 12. Duration sketch = marriage_years × band_factor(short 0.5 / moderate 0.6 / long 0.75).
Example scenario
Payor $135,000, recipient $48,000, 30% difference share → gap $87,000 → ~$26,100/year (~$2,175/month). A 14-year marriage falls in the moderate band → duration sketch up to about 8.4 years.
FAQ
Does Florida have a guideline percentage?
Not a single statewide amount formula comparable to Illinois. Courts apply statutory factors and alimony categories; settlements still often talk in monthly dollars and years.
What about bridge-the-gap or rehabilitative alimony?
Those types are purpose-built (short transition or training). This page's duration bands are a coarse planning overlay — map the type with your attorney.
Permanent alimony?
Florida's framework has moved away from classic permanent awards in many cases. Do not assume lifetime support from a long marriage alone.
Child support interaction?
Child support is calculated on its own guidelines and affects ability to pay. Model it separately before locking a spousal number.
