Walls
Wall area (sq ft)

|
|---|---|
Openings (sq ft)
i
Openings
Windows and doors you will not side over. |
|
Waste (%)
i
Waste
Cuts, starter, and corners. 10% is a common vinyl sketch; shakes need more. |
|
Coverage per box (sq ft)
i
Coverage
Label square-foot coverage. Vinyl often ~100 sq ft/box (1 square); fiber cement varies. |
How to use this calculator
- Enter gross wall square footage.
- Subtract openings.
- Add waste.
- Set coverage per box from the product you will buy.
Results explained
Net = wall − openings. With waste = net × (1 + waste%). Squares = that ÷ 100. Boxes = that ÷ coverage. Labor dollars sit on the siding cost calculator.
Quick reference: siding takeoff
One square = 100 sq ft of wall.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| 1 square | 100 sq ft |
| Typical vinyl box | Often ~1 square |
| Waste | 10% common; corners/gables more |

J-channel, starter, and soffit are linear-foot extras, not in this square count.
How the estimate is built
need = (wall − openings) × (1+waste%). squares = need/100. boxes = ceil(need/coverage).
Example scenario
1,800 − 200 = 1,600; +10% = 1,760 sq ft → 17.6 squares → 18 boxes at 100 sq ft.
