Tile width (in)

Tile width

Nominal face width in inches.

Tile height (in)
i
Tile height

Nominal face height. 12×24 is 12 by 24.

Grout joint (in)

Grout

Typical floor joint 1/8 in; mosaics often 1/16.

Waste (%)
i
Waste

Cuts, breaks, and extras for later repairs. 10% is common; diagonals and mosaics need more.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the area in square feet.
  2. Enter tile face size in inches.
  3. Set grout width.
  4. Add waste, then round up to whole tiles / boxes.

Results explained

Each module is (tile + grout) in feet. Count = area ÷ module, then × (1 + waste%). Distinct from tile installation cost.

Quick reference: tile count

Buy extra from the same dye lot. Matching later is hard.

ItemDetail
12×12 + 1/8 grout≈ 1.02 sq ft per module
Rectified 12×24Fewer joints, same waste idea
Diagonal layoutRaise waste toward 15%+
Labor?See tile installation cost

Sheet mosaics: enter the sheet size, not each 1-inch chip.

How the estimate is built

module sq ft = ((W+grout)/12) × ((H+grout)/12). order = ceil( area / module × (1 + waste%) ).

Example scenario

120 sq ft of 12×12 with 1/8 in grout and 10% waste → order about 130 tiles.
